Saltley Viaduct and Aston Church Road Overbridge are located two miles north east of Birmingham City Centre. They are both important crossing points, providing access to the city centre and the wards of Nechells and Alum Rock. Saltley Viaduct and Aston Church Road Overbridge join the largely residential area of Saltley, in Alum Rock, to Nechells and the city centre. The viaduct and overbridge will cross the HS2 line as it travels into the new high speed station at Birmingham Curzon Street.Saltley Viaduct and Aston Church Road overbridge are existing structures that carry roads over Network Rail tracks, the River Rea and the Birmingham and Warwick Junction Canal. Extra space is needed underneath both structures for the HS2 line to pass through. This means the existing structures will need to be demolished and entirely rebuilt whilst reconnecting to the existing road network at the same locations. This means it is important for us to involve the local community in their design. <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/672265/D1_-_Design_Policy_v1.8.pdf">You can find a full list of the Key Design Elements in Table 1 of HS2 Information Paper D1: Design policy.</a> <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/672265/D1_-_Design_Policy_v1.8.pdf"></a> Saltley Viaduct and Aston Church Road Overbridge are significant structures that span the area and cross other major transport links. We want them to respect their surroundings and the local area whilst doing their jobs effectively to last for 120 years. This means there are some aspects of the designs that we can’t change. Bromford Tunnel

HS2 is developing a more detailed design for Phase One of the railway, following the appointment of its main works contractors. The design process is helping HS2 plan and prepare for the construction of Britain’s new high speed railway.Part of the design process involves identifying opportunities to minimise the impact of the railway on local communities and the environment, while ensuring value for money.Bromford Tunnel Extension Transport and Works Act Order consultationWe previously published our plans to extend the Bromford tunnel from Birmingham into Warwickshire, which will minimise the overall impact of HS2 across the area. The Phase One High Speed Rail (London-West Midlands) Act generally allows us to refine the design of the railway in this way, although some additional consents for specific, technical aspects of the plans are required.In this particular case we are applying for a minor amendment to be made to the wording in the Act to remove the requirement for part of the railway to be constructed so as to include a viaduct (please see attached plan below). This will allow the relevant part of the railway to be constructed in tunnel under the Act and enable the proposal to extend the Bromford tunnel to proceed.This specific change involves applying for an Order under the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/transport-and-works-act-orders-a-brief-guide-2006">Transport and Works Act 1992</a> , as part of the proposed design change from viaduct to tunnel. As part of this process we consulted in Autumn 2020 on the proposed changes.The Transport &amp; Works Act Order (TWAO) application is progressing and as part of the process Eversheds, acting on behalf of HS2 Ltd, wrote to the Transport Infrastructure Planning Unit requesting a screening decision from the Secretary of State (SoS). HS2 Ltd has now received the Secretary of State’s <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/hs2-bromford-tunnel-extension-transport-and-works-act-order">screening decision</a> that an environmental assessment is required in relation to the Bromford Tunnel extension scheme. We are considering this decision to understand its implications and will be communicating an update as soon as we can.Benefits of the Bromford Tunnel extensionExtending the tunnel will provide several benefits:<li>Increasing the length of the tunnel from 2.8km to 5.7km will remove the need for complex engineering above ground in an already built-up and environmentally sensitive area, including a series of retained cuttings, retained fills and a viaduct</li> <li>There will be less land required in the Castle Bromwich Business Park area, meaning that fewer properties and businesses will be affected by the new railway line. This will save a number of jobs in the area</li> <li>Park Hall Nature Reserve will have a significantly reduced level of construction as we will no longer need to clear ancient woodland or divert the River Tame at this location</li> <li>Extending the tunnel reduces construction traffic on the road network in Birmingham. Instead of transporting spoil from Bromford along the local road network, we will transport it from Water Orton along purpose-built construction haul routes. These materials will be used locally near the Water Orton Flyover and along the Marsh Lane embankment</li> <li>There will be up to 260,000 fewer HGV movements over the course of construction, which will help to minimise our impact on the environment .</li>The eastern portal (Water Orton)<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:eco,w_1024/v1581547989/projects/hs2inwarwicks/2db8a004-85e5-43c0-afaa-fb11cf9a5405.jpg" />The eastern portal of the tunnel will be located off Attleboro Lane in Water Orton. The design of the portal is ongoing. We will keep local communities up to date as the design progresses.A compound will be used to construct the tunnel, to store materials and serve as a base for our workforce. It will be accessed via purpose-built haul roads.A substation to service the tunnel will also be located off Attleboro Lane. The substation will be designed and managed by Western Power Distribution.Eastern portal designTo minimise the noise of trains as they exit the tunnel, we will be constructing a porous portal.On high speed railways, the purpose of a porous portal is to ensure that the waves produced by the &#39;piston effect&#39; of the train moving at speed, which can otherwise result in noise as the train exits the tunnel, are kept at a level which does not adversely affect the surrounding area. A porous portal is generally achieved by providing perforated structures, usually of concrete, at the tunnel entrances.The western portal and Bromford<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:eco,w_1024/v1581548124/projects/hs2inwarwicks/7ef63240-c236-479d-a85d-f63eff1a6445.jpg" />The western portal of the tunnel will be moved 100 metres to the west of the location set out in the original scheme design. However, it will still be in the Washwood Heath area next to the HS2 maintenance depot.Moving the tunnel portal to the west eliminates the need to construct 100m of complex cuttings, which will lead to a reduced environmental impact and be more efficient to deliver.This means that there will no longer be a tunnel portal in the Bromford area. However, we will need to build a vent shaft, which will be located on Castle Bromwich Business Park above the tunnel on the old British Car Auctions site. This site has already been cleared in preparation for works.The vent shaft building will have equipment in it to provide ventilation and power to the tunnel. It will also be used for accessing the tunnel for maintenance and in the event of an emergency. The design of the vent shaft is ongoing. Old Curzon Street Station Building

The History The car park to the south of Curzon Street, opposite Millennium Point, was the home of the first railway terminus in central Birmingham that opened in 1838-9. The London and Birmingham, and the Grand Junction railways each had a station on this site. When New Street Station opened in the 1850s Curzon Street Station was converted into a Goods Office to service freight traffic on the railway until its closure, and demolition in 1966. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:eco,w_1024/v1594035382/projects/hs2inbirmingham/7cd318ef-550a-4d7c-8393-07d49838973d.png" />Old Curzon Street Station Goods Office - 1913 Future use and plans to incorporate the old station building into the new station designWe are working closely with Birmingham City Council (the current owners of the Old Curzon Street Station building) to protect the building and achieve agreement on a proposal to refurbish it for the period of the new station construction. The proposal under discussion is for the building to be refurbished for joint use as an HS2 community engagement and exhibition space; for Birmingham City University’s “STEAMHouse” project, which will see local students and international businesses cultivate their embryonic ideas in a university-linked and business-supportive environment; and for Historic England’s West Midlands office. Planning permission was granted in July 2017, the detailed design phase is well underway. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:eco,w_1024/v1512055468/projects/hs2inbirmingham/OCSS%201938.jpg" />Amazing archaeology: Unearthing the world’s oldest railway roundhouseOur programme of exciting archaeological excavations has unearthed thousands of years of British history along the route of the new railway, giving people the opportunity to learn about their past and the history of where they live. Digs around the site of the new Birmingham Curzon Street Station discovered a real gem of our industrial heritage: the remains of the world’s oldest locomotive roundhouse, part of the station’s 19th Century predecessor and designed by iconic railway engineer Robert Stephenson.Few 19th Century roundhouses have survived in their original form, so the dig, which began in early 2020, has provided a rare opportunity for archaeologists to investigate the full footprint of a major early railway terminus. With the survival of the main building and several below ground features, the site represents a unique opportunity to investigate the architecture even further.When it opened in 1838, Stephenson’s London and Birmingham Railway (L&amp;BR) made headlines as the first of its kind in the world. The first passenger train from London arrived into the Birmingham Curzon Street terminus on 17 September, while the adjacent roundhouse became operational the previous year on 12 November, 1837. The station required a roundhouse to allow locomotives to be turned around and the roundhouse engine shed - also a world first - functioned as a place where engines could be stored and serviced. Within a decade, a corresponding roundhouse was built at the London terminus, now better known as the world-renowned Roundhouse music venue in Camden.However, the roundhouse soon became obsolete as locomotives grew in size and weight, outgrowing the bays. Similarly, Curzon Street’s role as a passenger station was short-lived. By 1854, it was superseded by the construction of New Street station, a better-connected mainline hub. Crowds of commuters were replaced by pallets wagons and boxes as the station was converted into a goods depot, following the formation of the London and Northwestern Railway in 1846. The goods station operated until its eventual closure and demolition in the 1960s.<iframe src=https://www.youtube.com/embed/EYS7PPlY2ig></iframe> Uncovering the secrets of the roundhouseGiven that the roundhouse and various other structures were demolished in 1860 to facilitate expansion of the station goods yard, and with the site being covered by eight inches of reinforced concrete in the 1970s, it was unclear how much would remain. It took a team of more than 10 archaeologists nearly three months to excavate. By analysing sketch plans and maps of the site from the 1840s, the team were able to predict the location of the roundhouse remains within a few metres, but were surprised to find them so well preserved.Excavations uncovered key features including the base of the roundhouse turntable, central pit and external wall (which survived to above knee height). Radiating from this were the remains of locomotive bays, as well as the foundations of inspection pits which allowed engineers to access the engines from below.In the area surrounding the roundhouse, several long culverts (structures allowing water flow) built from curved bricks were uncovered, which would have drained water away from the structure, essential for a building situated on low-lying land near a canal.<iframe src=https://www.youtube.com/embed/WkmshVABLGk></iframe>The future of Curzon StreetAs the archaeological works conclude, the site will once again be at the heart of the rail network within the new Birmingham Curzon Street Station complex, and we are looking at the most appropriate ways to safeguard and preserve this highly significant archaeological find.The arrival of HS2 will see the site become home to the first brand new intercity terminus station built in Britain since the 19th Century. Managing the impacts of construction

Phase One of HS2 will see a new high speed line constructed from Euston to north of Birmingham, where it will re-join the existing West Coast Main Line. In November 2013, the government deposited a hybrid Bill with Parliament titled ‘High Speed Rail (London to West Midlands) Bill’. On 23 February 2017  <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/news/full-speed-ahead-as-hs2-gets-royal-assent">Royal Assent was granted for Phase One of HS2</a> . This granted HS2 Ltd the powers to construct Phase One of the HS2 network.The works to deliver HS2 are complex and of a scale not seen for decades. They will require careful management throughout the delivery of each phase of the railway. Our key aims are to minimise disruption to local residents and businesses, reduce the impact on the road and transport network and to minimise our impact on the environment.Regular CommunicationWe will ensure that we keep people informed at each stage of our construction programme. As part of our ongoing community engagement, we regularly update and notify local residents and businesses affected by our works in advance of them taking place. They work alongside our engagement teams and our contractors to resolve enquiries and complaints speedily.Our approach to traffic management<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:eco,w_1024/v1578320232/projects/hs2trainingdemo/e5c87407-40da-4251-80ac-96c556e2aae3.png" />How we’ll manage the impact of HS2 on local roadsAs we deliver Britain’s new high speed railway, we are committed to minimising our impact on the environment and being a good neighbour to communities affected by the project.We’re carefully planning how the railway will be constructed, including the way that we transport machinery, materials and our workforce, to and from our construction sites.We understand that <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/672387/E13_-_Management_of_Traffic_during_Construction_v1.5.pdf">traffic and transport management</a> during our construction work is a key issue for local communities. Our work will lead to more vehicles being on the roads in some locations. This page sets out how we will manage the impacts during the construction and delivery of the railway.Avoiding local roadsWe will minimise the use of local roads in several ways, including:<li>Building some dedicated ‘haul roads’ within the construction boundary, which will allow us to move materials and to access our construction sites effectively.</li> <li>Re-using most of the earth we excavate during construction in our earthworks and landscaping around the railway. This means the material won’t need to be moved long distances on the road network.</li> <li>Sourcing some of our materials to build the railway from local ‘borrow pits’, reducing the need to import materials over long distances.</li> <li>Using rail transport for the movement of construction materials and bulk waste, where possible.</li> <li>Using A roads and motorways, where possible, to reduce the impact on local communities.</li>Improving local roadsIn some locations we will be temporarily improving and increasing the capacity of the road network so it can accommodate our construction traffic.Crucially, these improvements will typically be constructed ‘off line’. This means that a new junction, for example, would be constructed off the existing highway in adjacent land. It can then be ‘tied in’ to the existing road when ready. This reduces the need for extensive traffic management measures or diversion routes while the improvements are being made.Working with local authoritiesThe <a href="https://services.parliament.uk/bills/2016-17/highspeedraillondonwestmidlands.html">High Speed Rail (London to West Midlands) Act 2017</a> provides the overall powers required for HS2 Ltd to build the railway. The powers also enable us to alter roads, where necessary.However, we will still need to obtain the consent of local planning authorities and relevant highway authorities for some aspects of our work in the future. This includes permission for the routes that lorries over 7.5t will take to and from our sites, if the number of vehicle movements exceeds 24 two-way trips per day.HS2 runs regular Local Traffic Liaison Meetings with highway authorities and the emergency services along the route between London and the West Midlands. These meetings provide an opportunity for our contractors to present proposals for future works affecting the highway, allowing the highways authorities to discuss our proposals and coordinate the work.Planning effectivelyWe have prepared a <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/hs2-phase-one-route-wide-traffic-management-plan">Route-wide Traffic Management Plan</a> (RTMP) for Phase One of the railway. It covers how our contractors are required to plan traffic and transport during construction. Contractors will need to prepare Local Traffic Management Plans which will set out how they intend to deliver the project, including significant changes to highways. The RTMP also sets out our requirements for monitoring construction traffic flows, as well as setting the project’s standards for vehicle and driver safety, the development of workforce travel plans and how we need to protect highways and other assets.Reducing disturbance to our neighboursWe recognise that as we develop, design and build the new railway, our activities will impact local communities.We are committed to being a good neighbour by treating the affected communities with respect and consideration, and by focusing on minimising and mitigating our impacts, whilst maximising the benefits both locally and nationally across the UK.As part of our <a href="https://www.hs2.org.uk/in-your-area/assistance-for-property-owners/residents-charter/">community commitments</a> our engagement teams act as the voice of the local communities within HS2 Ltd and our suppliers to ensure we meet the standards of our <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/593592/Code_of_Construction_Practice.pdf">code of construction practice</a> . To help us do this and reduce disturbance to our neighbours we have some of the following mitigation schemes available depending on your eligibility:Noise and vibrationThe construction work for HS2 is likely to create noise and vibration that will affect some residents living near HS2 worksites.We will design and construct HS2 in ways that reduce noise as much as we reasonably can. We’re doing this through a range of measures (our mitigation measures), and we’re monitoring air quality at medium and high-risk sites. Our air quality monitoring surveys add to existing national and local ones by Defra, local authorities, communities and academic institutions.The mitigating measures we use to help reduce our air quality impacts such as emissions and dust include:<li>Set emissions caps for all contractors’ vehicle engines (e.g. lorries, vans, and cars) and for all machinery (e.g. excavators, dumpers etc).</li> <li>Contractors use designated lorry routes to minimise the use of local roads.</li> <li>All our contractors are required to use a range of ways to reduce dust including damping down sites with water sprays. Details of our archaeological works in the Birmingham area

Archaeology

The creation of HS2 will be the biggest infrastructure project in Europe. The first new intercity railway to be built north of London in over a century.But before we build bridges, tunnels, tracks and stations, an unprecedented amount of archaeological work will take place along the line of route.HS2’s archaeology programme is a once-in-a-generation opportunity that will allow us to reveal over 10,000 years of British history, covering the Prehistoric, Romano-British, Anglo-Saxon and Medieval periods as well as the Industrial Revolution and World War Two.The sheer scale of possible discoveries, the geographical span of the project and the vast range of our history to be unearthed makes HS2’s historic environment programme a unique opportunity to tell the story of Britain, its past and future.Visit the HS2 website to find out more about <a href="https://www.hs2.org.uk/building-hs2/archaeology/">HS2’s historic environment and archaeology programme</a> . Archaeology in BirminghamThere are a number of archaeological sites that we will be exploring across the city. These include: <li>The archaeological exploration of 19th and 19th-century Park Street burial ground</li> <li>Uncovering the remains of Curzon Street Station yard</li> <li>Exploring the Freeman Street Baptist Meeting House and burial ground</li> <li>Surveying Midland Railway Carriage and Wagon Company at Saltley and Washwood Heath</li>The archaeological potential of Birmingham from Park Hall to Curzon Street/Park Street is as diverse as the city is today. There has been recorded settlement in Birmingham prior to the time of Domesday, (1086), where the survey by William the Conqueror created an inventory of all taxable land and property within England. There is evidence, albeit limited, for Anglo-Saxon occupation within the Birmingham area, there are also possibilities for Norman and Medieval archaeology findings along the Birmingham spur in pockets west of Park Hall. The most likely findings will be for post medieval activities including; industrial works such as tanneries, dye works, metal working - smithing, watermill sites and textiles throughout the Birmingham Spur. Birmingham was a great industrial powerhouse and was lauded during the 19th century as the first truly manufacturing centre, the city of a ‘thousand trades’. The area around Curzon Street may yield evidence of this industrial diversity with the remains of earlier factories, tanneries and mills, and through the analysis of human remains and funerary monuments at Park Street burial ground. Industrial archaeology is represented in the extant canals and rail infrastructure evident throughout Birmingham. Although Birmingham’s recent past is obvious and can be viewed all around the city, its prehistoric past is much more secretive and elusive. This prehistoric landscape will be revealed through selective geo-archaeological surveys, mapping the courses of the many underground (paleo-channels) prehistoric river channels that may once have held early prehistoric activities for Palaeolithic and later Mesolithic hunter gatherers, like fishing and tool making. All of the above may be revealed through the survey and study of past human activity and occupation as part of the enabling works along the route of HS2, from Park Hall to Park Street. The walk charts Digbeth&#39;s transformation from open fields to one of Britain&#39;s industrial powerhouses. Archaeology at Park Street GardensEvery month we publish an archaeology blog, direct from our contractors on site at Park Street Gardens. The History:The area around Park Street Gardens was originally a deer park during the medieval and post medieval periods (Little or Over Park), the park was situated on the eastern edge of the market town of Birmingham. During the late 18th century Birmingham became a significant industrial city and its urban population expanded close to the area that is now Park Street, which was still parkland. The parish church of St. Martin in the Bullring and its chapel of ease, St Bartholomew, could no longer contain the pressure on their combined burial grounds, due to the high density of population growth within this part of industrial Birmingham. The parkland to the east was purchased in 1807 by the church, and became an additional burial ground for the parish, opened in 1810. Park Street burial ground was is use for 63 years and was disused as a burial ground for public burials by 1873, the last recorded burial in a family vault was in 1893. Thereafter, Park Street became open recreational area, and finally public gardens. What has happened at Park Street Gardens since work began on HS2? Work began in October 2017 to investigate the historic site, and removal of the burial ground began in October 2018. All human remains discovered during work for HS2 are treated with dignity, care and respect, in the manner of their removal from the ground, in the way they are looked after while out of the ground and in the manner of their reburial. In accordance with HS2’s commitments to the Church of England, approximately 10,000 individuals have been removed from Park Street Gardens by the project’s archaeological specialists, by careful hand excavation, liaising closely with the Church and Historic England.In accordance with the High Speed Rail Act (2017) and a legal Undertaking with the Church of England, these remains will all be reburied in consecrated ground. Following a formal selection process involving key stakeholders, Witton Cemetery in Birmingham was chosen as the receiving burial ground for the Park Street Gardens buried population. Witton was selected due to its proximity within the city and the Diocese, and its urban parkland setting which is similar to that of Park Street Gardens.A monument to the those buried at Park Street Gardens will be erected in Witton cemetery in due course and the surviving headstones from Park Street relocated to the new burial site. Around half of the population from Park Street Gardens have already been reburied at Witton and the remaining individuals will be reburied in the coming months. An archaeological research program is ongoing, looking at a sample of these remains currently held in safe storage, to examine aspects of life in nineteenth century Birmingham.Remains of the world&#39;s oldest railway roundhouse at Curzon Street<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:eco,w_1024/v1584564788/projects/hs2inbirmingham/9620b9aa-3be7-4cd6-8c03-42b40817af88.jpg" />Our team of archaeologists has unearthed what is thought to be the world’s oldest railway roundhouse at the construction site of Birmingham Curzon Street station.The roundhouse was situated adjacent to the old Curzon Street station, which was the first railway terminus serving the centre of Birmingham and built during a period of great significance and growth for the city. Built to a design by the 19th century engineer Robert Stephenson, the roundhouse was operational on 12 November 1837 – meaning the recently discovered building is likely to predate the current titleholder of ‘world’s oldest’ in Derby by almost two years.The 19th century station at Curzon Street is among the very earliest examples of mainline railway termini and the limited later development of the site means that any surviving remains of the early station represents a unique opportunity to investigate a major early railway terminus in its entirety. The London &amp; Birmingham and the Grand Junction railways each had a station on this site. When New Street Station opened in the 1850s Curzon Street Station was converted into a Goods Office to service freight traffic on the railway until its closure, and demolition in 1966. Work begins: During Ground Investigation works in the car park a series of structural assessments have been carried out. This revealed the buried features which have been identified as possibly the foundations of post medieval buildings. It is likely that these represent the foundations and relics of the early mid-19th Century Goods Station. Archaeological investigation of this area is scheduled to begin in autumn 2018. The work undertaken by HS2 at Curzon Street and Park Street is likely to greatly enhance our understanding of the social and industrial history of the city of Birmingham. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:eco,w_1024/v1534778829/projects/hs2inbirmingham/Interior%20OCSS%20Goods%20Office%201913.jpg" /> Old Curzon Street Station Good Office - 1913 Freeman Street Baptist Meeting HouseThe History: A Baptist Meeting House and Burial Ground was licenced for public worship on Freeman Street (now part of a car park at the back of Moor Street Station) in 1729. The meeting house was only open for a short period as it closed between 1752 and 1754. The meeting house was the earliest known Baptist Meeting House in Birmingham. The meeting house was adapted for various uses until it was finally demolished in 1856 and the site was re-developed for the construction of a warehouse. The site remained in industrial use until the area was cleared in the early 2000s, to make way for a car park.Work begins: HS2 is considering how to carry out the potential burial ground excavations in this area. We are talking to the Heart of England Baptist Association about how we can ensure we treat any burial grounds with due dignity, care and respect. Archaeological investigations in this area are scheduled to begin in the autumn of 2018.Built heritage surveys at Saltley and Washwood HeathThe History:The sites at Saltley and Washwood Heath formed part of the Midland Carriage Works (later known as Metro-Cammell and Alstom), and produced train carriages for railways around the world from the middle of the 19th century until the closure of the Washwood Heath site in 2004, when the last Pendolino train was completed.During the First World War the Washwood Heath works were converted for use as the Birmingham National Shell (munitions) Factory. Then during the Second World War the site was used to produce a variety of different types of tanks which they supplied in substantial numbers to the British Army during the war.Work begins: The sites at Saltley and Washwood Heath include several of the original historic, industrial buildings. Prior to the demolition of these buildings, we carefully recorded what was there. We understand that the Midland Carriage Works was a focal point for local people, so a programme of community engagement is being organised to record the local community’s memories of the works. Managing our impact on the environment

We aim to build the most sustainable high speed railway in the world. Alongside improving connectivity and boosting the economy, it’s crucial that we manage our impact on the existing, natural environment.To help do this, we’re going to create a network of new wildlife habitats, woodlands and community spaces, helping to leave a lasting legacy along the route. We&#39;re calling this our &#39; <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sr1WmwUXfzc&amp;feature=youtu.be">green corridor</a> &#39; to help integrate HS2 into the landscape, with the design of the railway respecting its surroundings. It will include a network of habitats ranging from woodlands and meadows to wetlands and ponds. They will replace any habitats affected by the construction of HS2, while conserving and enhancing some too.To do this, we will create:<li>9km2 of new woodlands featuring 7 million trees and shrubs – over double the amount affected by HS2</li> <li>4km2 of wildlife habitat – over 30% more habitat than HS2 affects</li><iframe src=https://www.youtube.com/embed/Sr1WmwUXfzc></iframe>At a local level, new wildlife habitats ranging from badger setts to bat houses will support any animals affected by the construction of HS2. In many cases we’ll be able to leave behind bigger and better habitats than what’s already there. We’ll also have a responsible approach to natural resources, with most of the material we excavate for tunnels and cuttings being used as part of our earthworks. Ultimately, the green corridor should be able to support delicately balanced ecosystems running through the spine of the country. Wildlife LicencesWe undertake our ecological work in accordance within the necessary regulations, powers and licences. This includes our unprecedented programme of wildlife surveys and new habitat creation.Our approach is guided by the HS2 Act of Parliament and its Environmental Minimum Requirements. Ultimately, we are required to obtain the appropriate licenses from Natural England before undertaking any works that affect protected wildlife species. This includes species protected by the Habitats Regulations 2010 and the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended).We have organisational licences for work affecting great crested newts and badgers along the Phase One route, which are renewed every two years. Both we and our contractors obtain licences for works affecting other protected species on a site-by-site basis.Local Environment PlansInevitably, HS2 is going to leave a footprint on the British countryside. That’s something we want to carefully manage, while improving the environment where we can. To do this at a local level, we&#39;ve got a series of Local Environment Management Plans for the Phase One route. Rolling Stock Maintenance Depot (Washwood Heath Depot)A rolling stock maintenance depot is a workshop where train maintenance is carried out. The project will require a depot for the repair and servicing of high speed trains. The Washwood Heath site in Birmingham is the preferred location because it is centrally located in relation to the completed HS2 network.HS2 trains will be maintained at Washwood Heath, where activities will include cleaning, servicing and routine repairs of the trains. The depot will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with up to 500 staff working in shifts, either in jobs within the depot, maintenance and support staff, or train drivers who will start and finish their day there. It is HS2’s only rolling stock maintenance depot for Phases 1 and 2a of the railway.In addition to the main depot building a number of supporting facilities will be provided. These include; the network integrated control centre, gatehouse and access control, substations, cleaners facilities, drivers&#39; facilities, storage, specialised workshops, waste management, water treatment, water storage, open air storage area, administration facilities and parking areas. In addition to the main stabling tracks the area will include access tracks, a test track, loading and unloading tracks, provision for future tracks and by-passing tracks.The buildings in the depot will be designed and constructed to meet <a href="http://www.breeam.com/">BREEAM excellent standards</a> . The design intent for the overall site seeks to enhance social and environmental benefits for the surrounding community, provide an enhanced visual appearance for the area and improve west – east connectivity. Birmingham Curzon Street Station will be one of the most environmentally friendly stations in world. The station will achieve zero carbon emissions from day to day energy consumption. This means it will be highly efficient, generating energy through a range of different technologies.We will maximise the benefits of natural resources such as sunlight and water, and provide seamless connections between different transportation modes, Birmingham’s communities, and wildlife habitats. We’ve made sure that our landscape design plans include:<li>parkland lawns, rain gardens (to capture water), herbaceous shrubbery , and forest-scale tree planting across the site;</li> <li>new open green space and damp grassland habitats between Curzon Street and the viaduct to the east; and</li> <li>an environmental mitigation zone of broadleaf woodland to the south of the car park and viaduct, which will provide a natural habitat for local wildlife .</li>Connectivity and Accessibility<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:eco,w_1024/v1579554966/projects/hs2inbirmingham/abc4bde3-b901-4e62-9c4b-37187ba83a3c.jpg" />We’re working with Birmingham City Council, Transport for the West Midlands, Midland Metro Alliance, Network Rail and others to make sure that the station is well connected. Some of the key connections that will be provided include:<li>The tram line that will run alongside and underneath the station;</li> <li>A shared public space between Curzon Street and Moor Street stations to provide a simple and seamless connection between the two stations;</li> <li>Straightforward pedestrian routes allowing easy access to local bus services, Sprint (a rapid transit bus service) and onwards to other train services;</li> <li>‘Station Square’ – a generous public space to be used as a destination and meeting space ;</li> <li>Good public transport, walking and cycling links into Digbeth and to both the Knowledge Quarter and the central business district in Birmingham city centre;</li> <li>Well-designed public spaces, including space for events and a seamless connection to Eastside City Park ; and</li> <li>Improved pedestrian and cycling links between Digbeth Conservation Area and Birmingham’s Knowledge Quarter.</li>We’re working with Birmingham City Council to see how our design can best allow for any future improvements to the public space between Curzon Street Station, Moor Street Station and New Street Station to provide a seamless connection between these major stations.We know that good cycling facilities at the station are important to you, so we’ve made sure that cycle parking has been carefully considered in the design of the new station. The station will achieve zero carbon emissions from day to day energy consumption. This means it will be highly efficient, generating energy through a range of different technologies.We will maximise the benefits of natural resources such as sunlight and water, and provide seamless connections between different transportation modes, Birmingham’s communities, and wildlife habitats. We’ve made sure that our landscape design plans include:<li>parkland lawns, rain gardens (to capture water), herbaceous shrubbery , and forest-scale tree planting across the site;</li> <li>new open green space and damp grassland habitats between Curzon Street and the viaduct to the east; and</li> <li>an environmental mitigation zone of broadleaf woodland to the south of the car park and viaduct, which will provide a natural habitat for local wildlife .</li>Connectivity and Accessibility<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:eco,w_1024/v1579554966/projects/hs2inbirmingham/abc4bde3-b901-4e62-9c4b-37187ba83a3c.jpg" />We’re working with Birmingham City Council, Transport for the West Midlands, Midland Metro Alliance, Network Rail and others to make sure that the station is well connected. Some of the key connections that will be provided include:<li>The tram line that will run alongside and underneath the station;</li> <li>A shared public space between Curzon Street and Moor Street stations to provide a simple and seamless connection between the two stations;</li> <li>Straightforward pedestrian routes allowing easy access to local bus services, Sprint (a rapid transit bus service) and onwards to other train services;</li> <li>‘Station Square’ – a generous public space to be used as a destination and meeting space ;</li> <li>Good public transport, walking and cycling links into Digbeth and to both the Knowledge Quarter and the central business district in Birmingham city centre;</li> <li>Well-designed public spaces, including space for events and a seamless connection to Eastside City Park ; and</li> <li>Improved pedestrian and cycling links between Digbeth Conservation Area and Birmingham’s Knowledge Quarter.</li>We’re working with Birmingham City Council to see how our design can best allow for any future improvements to the public space between Curzon Street Station, Moor Street Station and New Street Station to provide a seamless connection between these major stations.We know that good cycling facilities at the station are important to you, so we’ve made sure that cycle parking has been carefully considered in the design of the new station. Demolitions

Birmingham’s new city centre station location relies on a rail route through a historically industrial part of the West Midlands with associated demolition of buildings and structures along the route alignment. HS2 have worked with businesses and homeowners to try and minimise the impact. The majority of demolitions in Birmingham are low level industrial buildings close to the Network Rail links into Birmingham New Street station.When will this work take place?Over the next two years, commencing in 2018, pre-demolition site surveys followed by demolition will take place. What buildings will be affected? HS2 will be demolishing a number of structures within Birmingham, the buildings that will be affected include:· Castle Bromwich Business Park,· Bromford,· Washwood Heath,· Saltley &amp; Network Business parks,· Duddeston, and· Various buildings near Curzon Street – including the Fox and Grapes Public House &amp; the UNITE student accommodation building.The buildings that will be demolished are predominately industrial and warehousing units, but also includes residential properties around the depot area.Who will be doing the work? The demolition work is being planned and managed by HS2 Ltd, but the demolition is being undertaken by specialist contractors. Our Enabling Works Contractor LMJV will conduct the pre-demolition site surveys. What does this work involve? Pre-demolition planning will identify the environmental conditions and any health and safety matters the contractor needs to have in place before work takes place on each of the sites. Mitigation factors will include the management and control of falling and hazardous materials, traffic management, and control of dust, noise and vibration.The first stages of demolition include the removal of hazardous materials followed by stripping the structure back to its integral parts. When the structural frame is exposed, final checks are undertaken to confirm pre-demolition survey findings. Structures within the Birmingham Spur will generally be demolished using bespoke, carefully selected demolition machines appropriate for each structural element being demolished. There is a wide variety of machinery available, from a ‘high reach’ machine that can work up to 65m high to an ‘umbilical cord’ remotely operated small machine that can use its track to climb stairs within a building. Attachments to the machine arms enable concrete to be crushed, steel to be sheared or debris to be sorted. All demolition waste is sorted and re-cycled wherever possible with a recycling target of over 90%. As part of developing the route design of the HS2 high speed railway, we have carried out a programme of ground investigation surveys.This type of survey helps us to understand more about the ground where we want to build the railway. It’s vital that we know about the soil before construction begins so we can build effectively. Further details of what ground investigation works entail are contained within the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/412948/HS2_ground_investigations_-_a_non-technical_guide.pdf">non-technical guide</a> .<iframe src=https://www.youtube.com/embed/l8pCfamzccM></iframe> Balfour Beatty Vinci, (BBV), has been appointed by HS2 Limited at its Main Works Civil Contractor, (MWCC), for the Construction of the two-packages for work for Phase One of the High Speed 2 programme. The work packages cover the line from Long Itchington Tunnel in the south to Handsacre in the north, along with the spur into Birmingham City Centre. The award was made in July 2017 and since then BBV has been working on the Early Contractor Involvement, (ECI) phase of the project.HS2 Limited has already carried out a range of ground investigation and survey work. This programme of work had some gaps and was transferred to BBV to complete. This has enabled BBV to ensure that outstanding samples and surveys are taken from the most appropriate location to best inform its design. BBV’s design programme has also identified a number of Ground investigations and Surveys that are also required to more completely inform the Design and Construction programme being prepared.A number of different types of Survey are being carried out:1. Ground Investigation2. Ground Penetrating Radar surveys for utility location identification3. Permanent Ground Marker location validation4. Bathymetric Surveys in water bodies where structures will be built5. LIDAR topographic assessment of the route by helicopter Balfour Beatty VINCI have been working with their supply chain since May 2018, completing Ground Investigation Survey works. Ground Investigation is by its nature short-term intermittent activity. Different surveys will require us to work in different locations for different durations and on occasions some areas will have work taking place on multiple dates.Our teams will continue to operate from three locations – one in Southam, one in Washwood Heath and one in Curdworth. This is where you can learn about how we plan to reduce and monitor the effects of our construction work on the environment.SummaryThis Local Environmental Management Plan (LEMP) sets out site specific control measures to be adopted by HS2 contractors working within the Birmingham area and on the Curzon Street Station site.HS2 Ltd’s contractors will be carrying out construction works that are subject to the High Speed Rail Phase One <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/environmental-minimum-requirements">Environmental Minimum Requirements</a> (EMRs). These set-out the high-level environmental and sustainability commitments to be implemented during the planning and implementation of works along the Phase One line of route. The Code of Construction Practice (CoCP) is part of the EMRs and requires the nominated undertaker to produce a Local Environmental Management Plan (LEMP) specific to each Local Authority area along the Phase One line of route. HS2 Ltd and its consultants have produced the initial LEMPs for the Birmingham area and the Curzon Street Station site.The Contractors working for HS2 Ltd are required to comply with and work to this LEMP, which is based on environmental information currently available to the project, including the Environmental Statement and subsequent Additional Provisions.Are these finalised?HS2 Ltd has been engaging with Birmingham City Council during the production of this LEMP. The most up to date version of the LEMP is published on the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/local-environmental-management-plans-for-hs2-phase-one">government website</a> .If, up to and during detailed design, new environmental baseline information comes to light (such as the identification of new sensitive receptors), then the LEMP will be updated to reflect these changes.What happens next?HS2 Ltd and/or its Contractors have already started engagement in the Birmingham area and will continue to engage with the local stakeholders. This will take the form of engagement events which will be carried out to introduce and brief the communities on local environmental information, management and mitigation as detailed within this document.  HS2 Community and Business FundsIn October 2014 the government announced two funding programmes to help offset the disruption of Phase One of HS2 on local communities and businesses - the Community and Environment Fund (CEF) and the Business and Local Economy Fund (BLEF).A combined total of £40 million has been made available for these two funds over a period of 11 years. The funds will be released during the construction period and for the first year of operational HS2 (Phase One) services. Wherever possible, the CEF fund aims to leave a sustainable legacy.</li>CEF funding is targeted at the voluntary/community sector, including residents&#39; associations, constituted community groups, Community Interest Companies (CICs), social enterprises, community businesses and registered charities.Business and Local Economy FundApplications can be for capital or revenue funding from £10,000 up to a maximum of £1 million. Through this funding, we are looking to fund interventions that will have a positive impact on local economies, including a number of small schemes that are brought together in a package of interventions.Funding of less than £75,000 will typically be for short-term kick-starter projects and support between £75,000 and £1 million will typically be for long-term development projects.BLEF funding is targeted at organisations which have formal objectives that support the development of local business/tourism. The existing Moor Street Station is at one end, the Millennium Point Development and historic Curzon Street Station building are to the north of the site and the existing Birmingham to Rugby railway line runs along the south side.The new station will not only be for high speed rail passengers, it will be a brand new public space and gateway into Birmingham city centre. The construction work for HS2 is likely to create noise and vibration that will affect some residents living near HS2 worksites. We will design and construct HS2 in ways that reduce noise as much as we reasonably can. In certain circumstances, where construction noise from HS2 is still likely to affect you in your home, we may offer to install noise insulation for you, or pay for you to install it yourself. <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/672398/E23_-_Control_of_construction_noise_and_vibration_v1.7.pdf">HS2 Information paper E23: Control of Construction Noise and Vibration</a> outlines the policy and how eligibility for noise insulation is determined.What is noise insulation?The type of noise insulation we offer is called ‘secondary glazing’. Secondary glazing typically consists of a single pane in an aluminium frame. It is installed inside your room, set back 100mm to 200mm from your existing window. Your original windows will remain in place and unaltered. Supplementary ventilation is often required, so you can keep your windows closed during periods of noise. Venetian-style blinds can also be installed between the panes, to shade rooms from direct sunlight and reduce heat.More information about the noise insulation package can be found in <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/664907/hs2_phase_one_noise_insulation_leaflet.pdf">our Noise Insulation Leaflet.</a>Who qualifies?You may qualify if you live in a house, flat or other building used for residential purposes, and the predicted or actual construction noise levels exceed the ‘trigger levels’ and ‘temporal criteria’ - you can read about these in <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/672398/E23_-_Control_of_construction_noise_and_vibration_v1.7.pdf">HS2 information paper E23.</a> Prolonged disruption compensation schemeThe Government has announced the HS2 Prolonged Disruption Compensation Scheme.This policy complements a wider package of environmental controls set out in the HS2 Phase One environmental minimum requirements and adds to the noise insulation and temporary re-housing measures set out in information paper E23.We are aware of the issues that building a new railway can cause to people who live nearby. HS2 recognise that traffic and transport management during construction is a key issue for local communities along the line of route. In particular, construction will lead to many more vehicles on the road network and to short-term and long-term changes to the road network.HS2 have made many commitments to minimise impacts where practicable to do so and has prepared a <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/hs2-phase-one-route-wide-traffic-management-plan">Route-wide Traffic Management Plan</a> . This plan sets out how contractors will be expected to deliver the project. It covers how contractors are to plan traffic and transport during construction, managing construction flows, vehicle and driver safety, workforce travel plans, temporary traffic management and how the project needs to protect highways and other assets. Contractors are required to prepare local traffic management plans, setting out their local strategies for managing traffic and to set out their proposed lorry routes and forecast traffic flows. These plans will be consulted on through local traffic liaison meetings which have been established along the HS2 phase 1 route and include highway authorities, emergency services and other key stakeholders such as public transport representatives. These meetings will enable review of site specific traffic management measures as they are developed by HS2’s contractors.Current roadworks When the construction of HS2 requires traffic restrictions on local roads, we work closely with the local highway authorities to ensure communities and road-users are made aware.
